Purpose of the role

The Senior Legal Advisor will act as Number 2 to the Practice Head. They will assist in ensuring that legal advice is delivered in a manner which achieves business objectives and while recognising the realities of the commercial and operational challenges that business colleagues deal with.

The Senior Legal Advisor will also play a proactive role in supporting the Practice Head and the existing team of lawyers in optimising efficiencies and effectiveness including ensuring that the internal know-how and legal guidance available to business colleagues is updated by the team on an ongoing basis and ensuring that business colleagues can rely on the practice grouping to deliver high quality pro-active legal advice which is commercially focused and adheres to tight timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a Senior Legal Advisor in active support of the Practice Head and the existing team of lawyers, on legal issues, strategic projects and development of Group policies and strategies on all matters that affect business units within Business Banking (BBROI), BOI Finance (BIF) and Challenged Assets Group (CAG).
  • With a deep understanding of business banking strategy and practice, delivering expert, accurate and cost-effective legal advice to BBROI, BIF and CAG, ensuring it is readily understandable to non-lawyers, delivered within relevant timescales, is commercial and proactive and manages or minimises legal risks.
  • Display good listening, writing and speaking skills, setting out logical arguments clearly and adapting language and form of communication to meet the needs of diverse audiences.
  • Use a range of non-standard and creative approaches to inform, and persuade others, extending beyond legal argument to influence decisions and actionsin a way which is collaborative, inclusive, and engaging.
  • Understand the benefit and necessity for ensuring that all in house know-how documentation (Precedents, Protocols and Procedures) used by the Business Banking and CAG Practice Group in GLS are kept up todate and relevant to a fast-changing legal environment. Work proactively in the updating and transmission of know-how to other team members so that skills and competencies are maintained to a high standard and uniformity of legal advice can be ensured.
  • Interact and forge customer service relationships with senior stakeholders in BBROI, BIF and CAG to ensure excellence in the delivery of legal advice and expertise to business colleagues.
  • Engage in a proactive, dynamic manner with business colleagues and team members. Be an effective and active member of GLS by contributing positively to its development. Support Practice Head and team members by proactive advance discussions of developing legal issues to ensure consistent GLS view and quality output to business colleagues.
  • Have a track record of identifying and highlighting risks and suggesting mitigating actions in strategic and business plans and of providing a clear model of best practiceto business colleagues.
  • Work co-operatively on a cross-border basis and cross-departmental basis with other Group Legal colleagues where applicable.

A qualified lawyer with excellent people skills and a strong knowledge of banking law/practice, general financial services law regulatory/compliance matters and property issues.

  • Extensive post-qualification experience gained either in private practice specialising inthe areas of banking and finance law or acting as in house legal advisor in a financial institution.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide clear and robust legal advice in a collegiate manner while incorporating a pragmatic commercial viewpoint.
  • Ability to work under pressure in order to deliver to tight deadlines.
  • Dynamic and proactive approach which will ensure that BBROI, BIF and CAG are well positioned in respect of all legal matters.
