Risk Matters, the latest instalment of Bank of Ireland’s professional information series was held at the Workbench in the Trinity College Branch on May 16th. There was a full house of Risk professionals present to explore the evolving role of compliance within financial services.

Introduced by Group Executive Committee member and Chief Governance and Regulatory Officer, Peter Morris, the Group Head of Compliance and Regulatory Risk Máiréad Devine provided an overview of the current landscape of Compliance in Financial Services as well as giving an insightful snapshot of the potential evolution of compliance functions into the future.

Dr Finbarr Murphy from the ACOI presented the key role education plays in the ever evolving world of compliance. He highlighted a trend gravitating towards shorter courses that are implicitly specialist rather than generalist, as well as the need for constantly upskilling and learning.

Eavan Garvey (Head of Group Conduct Risk) explored trending Compliance and Risk themes across the industry with the dynamic and informative panel of Aine McCleary (Director of Direct Channels), Sean Whelan (Audit Partner for Governance, Group Internal Audit) and Roger Long (Head of Retail Business Assurance) giving their valuable insights
